Why did I start a blog?

I've always been a frustrated writer, wannabe model, and adventurer extraordinaire. I first tried my hand at blogging in college as a way to vent. My first proper blog, Fat Barbie, was my way of pursuing those small passions. What started as an online diary of sorts has evolved into my current, self-titled blog: a more socially aware, style conscious, body positive, and bold exploration of my interests and passions.

Who are your fashion icons?

Rihanna is at the top of my list. She is fearless and manages to add elegance with an edge to any outfit she wears. Kim Kardashian West's current muted, minimalist style and Chiara Ferragani's effortless street chic are also favorites.

What are your favorite clothing stores?

I love the aesthetic and style of Zara and its cheaper cousin, H&M. So many of my office-appropriate pieces are from them. Akira Chicago has an edgy, street chic vibe that I adore but I'm waiting for their plus size section to expand. Target is another favorite. They always have sizes going up to 4X and their recent collaborations with top designers have been wonderful. Besides those stores, I love thrift shops and secondhand stores like Crossroads and Plato's Closet.

Why did you leave Fat Barbie?

I first came across the term 'Fat Barbie' as a hashtag that one of my friends used to caption a photo. Fat was a word I was familiar with. It followed me from the classroom to family gatherings and I had grown to despise it. Barbie was also familiar. It was an aesthetic ideal that was ingrained in me from childhood. Combining those two words was a bit of an oxymoron and it clicked for me. It was my way of reclaiming the word that haunted me and challenging the image of the ideal woman

But as my blog grew and expanded, I wanted to establish myself with my own name and build a brand around it instead of around two words that challenge me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I see myself living and working in San Francisco. I hope that by that time, I have grown both personally and professionally and I'm at manager-level. In 5 years, I see myself going back to school to complete a full makeup course or to pursue my masters degree in Business Administration.
